Brussels, 31 March 2005
Dear Colleagues,
In our capacity as Co-Presidents of the Green/EFA
Parliamentary Group, we are extremely happy to be
able to give our Group's support to the
International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) on 17
May 2005.
The celebration and promotion of the International
Day Against Homophobia is a just and worthy event –
especially if one believes, as we do, in a more
equal and inclusive world in the 21st Century.
The fight against discrimination on the basis of
sexual orientation has been one of our Group's core
values from the start and we are proud of the key
role we have played in shaping the European Union's
non-discrimination policy, and in particular the
historic vote on the Roth resolution in 1994. We
know well that a lot remains to be done and we
assure the LGBT community that the fight against
ignorance, oppression and discrimination is a common
cause which unites us all.
We also know that, to this day and in many countries
of the world, people suffer terribly from
discrimination and abuse because of their
(homo)sexual orientation. Many countries still
consider homosexuality a criminal – and, in some
places, capital – offence, punishable by death.
The progress we have made in the EU must not
distract us from the fact that homophobia is still a
bitter reality in most of the world. We firmly
believe that a truly equal society can only exist if
equality becomes a shared and embraced value in the
whole world. Our group is committed to better focus
the Union's foreign policy on the advancement of
human rights across the globe.
17 May 2005 marks the 15th anniversary of the
decision by the General Assembly of the World Health
Organization to remove homosexuality from their list
of mental disorders.
The International Day Against Homophobia, which will
be celebrated internationally in more than 30
countries, aims to stimulate debate on issues
relating to the protection and defense of gay and
lesbian rights.
We are proud to officially endorse the day in our
capacity as Co-Presidents of the Green/EFA Group,
and, along with our colleagues, we wish you the best
of luck for the events planned to celebrate the
International Day Against Homophobia 2005.
