Strasbourg,
7th March, 2005
Dear Colleagues,
In my capacity of Leader of the Parliamentary Group
of the Party of European Socialists (PES), I am
extremely happy to be able to give my group's
support to the International Day Against Homophobia
(IDAHO) 17th May 2005.
The celebration and promotion of the International
Day Against Homophobia is a just and worthy event in
the context of a tolerant and respectful 21st
century world.
The PES Group is proud of the political battles it
has won and the key role it has played in shaping
the European Union's non-discrimination policy in
the fields of employment and social affairs. We will
continue to promote tolerance and defend the rights
of gay men and lesbian women in their continuing
fight against ignorance, oppression and
discrimination.
Non-discrimination on the grounds of sexual
orientation is a basic fundamental. Yet, in many
countries of the world homosexuals, to this day,
suffer terribly from discrimination and abuse. Many
countries still make homosexuality a criminal
offence. It is even a capital offence, punishable by
death in some parts of the world.
Such inhumane treatment is simply not acceptable.
The PES Group is committed to working hard to defend
the rights of homosexuals both within the European
Union and further field. We will do all we can to
ensure fundamental rights are respected.
The 17 May marks the day, in 1990, when the General
Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO)
removed homosexuality from their list of mental
disorders.
The International Day Against Homophobia, which will
be celebrated internationally in more over 30
countries, aims to stimulate debate on issues
relating to the protection and defense of gay and
lesbian rights. I am proud to officially endorse the
day in my capacity as President of the Parliamentary
Group of the Party of European Socialists.
I and my colleagues wish you the best of luck for
the events planned to celebrate the International
Day Against Homophobia 2005.
Martin Schulz,
President, Group of European Socialists in the
European Parliament. |
