INTERGROUP ON GAY AND LESBIAN RIGHTS
EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
Letter of support for the International Day Against
Homophobia (IDAHO) 17th May 2005
It is with great pleasure that we, the Officers of
the European Parliament's Intergroup on Gay and
Lesbian Rights, endorse the International Day
Against Homophobia (IDAHO) 17th May 2005.
The 17 May is a symbolic date for gays and lesbians
throughout the world. It was on this date in 1990
that the General Assembly of the World Health
Organization (WHO) removed homosexuality from their
list of mental disorders.
The International Day Against Homophobia, which will
be celebrated internationally in more over 30
countries aims to stimulate debate on issues
relating to the protection and defense of gay and
lesbian rights as sexual orientation should be
regarded as a fundamental right in each and every
country of the world.
The IDAHO provides an excellent opportunity for
International gay and lesbian organisations and
political entities such as the EU to highlight the
far reaching achievements made in the field of gay
rights. It can also act as a platform to continue
the fight against discrimination and build on
achievements, both within the European Union and on
a world level.
The European Parliament's Intergroup on Gay and
Lesbian rights is proud to support this excellent
initiative which will celebrate progress made in the
past and look to further improvements in the future.
We wish you the very best for the event.
